With increased global competition and an accelerating pace of innovation, attracting skilled talent becomes ever more important to secure long-term economic growth. A skilled workforce can be achieved through domestic education, by attracting foreign talent, or by individuals studying abroad or gaining knowledge in another country. The SIREUS-program enhances collaboration between the Sweden and the US, through increased talent mobility. SIREUS helps universities and business communities in both countries to secure the competence needs for the future and promote Sweden as a nation of knowledge, sustainability and innovation.

Study in Sweden Tour 2025
October 6–10 2025
Washington, D.C., Chicago, Minneapolis & St. Peter

Ten leading Swedish universities joined the SIREUS-team on the Study in Sweden tour 2025, to meet and connect with American students and universities. Together, they traveled from Washington D.C., to Chicago and North Park University, to Minneapolis and the American Swedish Institute, before ending the tour in St Peter at Gustavus Adolphus College. SIREUS hosted four student fairs across all stops, and multiple engagements with American universities.

Virtual Workshop: International Year of Quantum Science and Technology

The SIREUS team and the Embassy of Sweden in Washington hosted a webinar on the Sweden-US Research Forum on Quantum Computing. The International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ 2025) is a global initiative proclaimed by the United Nations to celebrate the 100th anniversary of modern quantum mechanics. IQY 2025 aims to raise awareness about the importance of quantum science and its impact on technology and society. Throughout the year, various events and activities will be organized worldwide to promote quantum science, technology, and education. As part of this yearlong celebration, SIREUS team and the Embassy of Sweden in Washington hosted an engaging virtual workshop featuring insights from leading Swedish and American experts on recent development in quantum computing, and to explore opportunities for increased bilateral research cooperation in the field.

Study in Sweden Tour 2024

SIREUS recently completed its annual Study in Sweden tour, visiting three major U.S. cities and welcoming students eager to learn about studying in Sweden. The tour brought together representatives from nine of Sweden’s top universities, who engaged with prospective students to highlight the benefits of Sweden’s educational system, its unique student life, and its commitment to sustainability and innovation. Through a series of interactive events, students had the opportunity to meet university staff, gain insights into Swedish academic programs, and connect with alumni who shared their own experiences studying in Sweden. These events provided invaluable information for those interested in pursuing higher education abroad and emphasized the diverse opportunities available in Sweden. Additionally, three exclusive alumni gatherings were held, where past graduates came together to network, reconnect, and discuss their career journeys and life experiences since graduation. These events fostered a strong sense of community, allowing alumni to share insights and build connections within the Swedish-American network.

SIREUS Research Forum, webinar

Moderator was Linda Andrén, Director US-Sweden Green Transition Initiative. Speakers were ​​​​​Ivan Rupnik, PhD, is an architect and urban designer and associate professor at Northeastern University and Gustav Jansson, Associate Professor at Luleå University of Technology, Sweden.

SIREUS Entrepreneurs Forum
March 18–22, 2024

SIREUS invited members to an exciting immersion program for research-based startups and university personnel. This event was a chance to connect with businesses, investors, research institutions, federal laboratories, and key opinion leaders in the research and innovation ecosystem in Colorado. This week-long immersion event was hosted by SIREUS in collaboration with SACC-Colorado and the University of Colorado, Boulder in conjunction with the 2024 Destination Startup conference in Denver. We are delighted to announce the inclusion of six startup companies from Stockholm University, Uppsala University, and Lund University.

On February 5-9th, SIREUS hosted an Innovation Tour in Texas. During the tour, Christer Bergman, Program Director at SIREUS, was joined by a delegation from the Innovation Offices of six major Swedish universities, along with Dr. Maria Brogren, Head of the Office of Science and Innovation at the Embassy of Sweden to the United States. The SIREUS Texas Innovation Tour aimed to cultivate relationships between Swedish and Texan universities and their innovation offices. Key objectives included gaining insights into the innovation processes of American universities and their strategies for bringing ideas to market, particularly in the realm of deep tech research. The tour included visits at visits to San Antonio (UTSA and City of San Antonio), Austin (UT at Austin), College Station (Texas A&M), and Houston (TMS Innovation Center, ION Innovation Center, Rice University, and the University of Houston).

SIREUS Research Forum, webinar
December 11, 2023

SIREUS launched a forum for researchers, and kicked off its series of monthly online events on 11th of December 2023. This forum serves as a network for researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs to share insights, spark interdisciplinary conversations, and help shape the future of research.

At the first event on December 11th, participants had the opportunity to learn about the development of collaborations across borders, specifically between Sweden and the U.S. The featured speakers for this session included Dr. Maria Brogren, Counselor for Science, Innovation, and Higher Education at the Embassy of Sweden in the United States, and Sofia Sedergren-Booker, President of the STARS Network.

Study in Sweden Tour 2023
November 2–6, 2023
New York, Pullman & Orange County

During November 2023, twelve Swedish universities traveled to three locations across the United States to meet with American students. Study in Sweden events were held in New York State at SACC-NY, in Washington State at the WSU Pullman campus and in California at Chapman University. 

One of the goals of the SIREUS project is to strengthen Sweden’s attractiveness as a study destination for American students and researchers and these events gave many students and young people interested in pursuing a higher education in Sweden the chance to mingle with representatives from 12 leading Swedish universities! Participants at the events had the opportunity to learn more about the university's programs, scholarships, student life and how the Swedish university application process works. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the events and all of the students for coming!

SIREUS Members Forum

Last week, the SIREUS MEMBERS forum was hosted together with our Swedish Member Universities. The event took place in conjunction with NAFSA in Washington, D.C. and was hosted on the rooftop of the House of Sweden. It was an unforgettable evening of networking and collaboration. 
 
Representatives from Swedish member universities and the SIREUS Affiliation of American Universities came together, along with guests from academia, government, and industry sectors. This unique occasion fostered connections, idea sharing, and the formation of strategic partnerships between Swedish and American academia and businesses. At the event, we had representatives from 16 countries, 23 states in the U.S. and 94 universities.

SIREUS Chancellors Forum
February 21–22, 2023

SIREUS hosted the SIREUS CHANCELLORS forum 2023 in Washington, D.C. During the two days, SIREUS welcomed executive-level delegates from 11 Swedish and 14 American universities to an event which involved interesting panel discussions, presentations, networking and performances. Besides the representatives from academia, the event also hosted people from government and business life. 

In today's environment, democracies are challenged in sustaining collaboration in the face of conflict and competition. Academia is a critical stakeholder in maintaining free collaboration and cooperation. Hence, SIREUS CHANCELLORS forum focused on bringing together thought leaders across government, industry, and academia to share their perspectives on how best a US-Sweden network can support democracy through soft diplomacy.

This week-long immersion event was hosted by SACC-Colorado, SACC Arizona, and The University of Colorado, Boulder in conjunction with the 2023 Destination Startup conference.

Study in Sweden Event 2022

House of Sweden, Washington, D.C.

November 1st, 2022, SIREUS hosted its first Study in Sweden-event, which became a sold-out event. At 5 pm students from the local area of DC with an age range from High School to Master’ students arrived at House of Sweden in Washington D.C. Eight top Swedish universities represented the student fair where the students had the opportunity to mingle and learn more about what Sweden has to offer in higher education. Furthermore, the students had the opportunity to try traditional Swedish food, and listen to the President of Lund University, Erik Renström, and Maria Brogren from the Embassy of Sweden.

​​​​​​​Additionally, distinguished speakers Michael C. Andersson (SAAB) and Leah Scheunemann (Atlantic Council) discussed topics concerning Transatlantic Security. Afterward, a panel discussion between previous students who had studied in Sweden shared their experiences which was moderated by SIREUS Program Director Mr. Christer Bergman.
